Het planten van een knotboom is zeer gemakkelijk. Bovendien kan je met het snoeihout vele nuttige dingen doen op je erf zoals het vlechten van manden of schuttingen, het bouwen van een houtril als erfafscheiding of maak er een levende groene hut van voor kinderen. Je kan er zelfs je eigen midwinterhoorn van maken. En het is bovendien een doorlopende bron van brandhout. Knotbomen waren niets voor niets eeuwen lang onmisbare kleinschalige landschapselementen op boerenerven. Ook zijn knotbomen bepalend voor het aangezicht van het landschap en een aanwinst voor biodiversiteit.
Knotbomen kan je gemakkelijk zelf aanleggen door een uitloper van een knotboom (een teen) af te zagen en alle zijtakken te verwijderen. Zorg voor een lengte van ongeveer 2 meter en als je van de onderste 20 centimeter de bast afhaalt creëer je een efficiënte stok (een poter) die je in de winter kan planten en in het voorjaar snel zal uitlopen. In de eerste paar jaar haal je iedere zomer alle uitlopers onderaan de stam weg behalve het pruikje van uitlopers in de kroon van boom. Na een jaar of drie knot je de pruik voor de eerste keer. Dit herhaal je om de 3 tot 5 jaar. Zo ontstaat er langzaam een karakteristieke knotboom.
